Making Biochar to Improve Soil Health

By Nolbert Muhumuza | Founder | Giving Hope Foundation

In the quiet fields of Kitoba, Hoima district, Rosemary’s garden is flourishing. Her plants are healthy and vibrant. When asked about her secret, she smiled and shared her story.

Since receiving her gasifier stove, Rosemary began saving the biochar it produced. Inspired by the training conducted by GivingHope staff, she started adding the biochar to her soil. At first, she was unsure, but soon, her crops grew stronger and healthier. The biochar improved the soil's ability to retain water and nutrients, transforming her once dry, struggling plot into a fertile haven.

Now, Rosemary not only enjoys the benefits of her stove for cooking but also reaps the rewards of improved harvests, feeding her family better and even sharing with her neighbours. The gasifier stove has not only changed her kitchen—it is also bringing a new life to her garden.
