Mynor is a 58-year-old Guatemalan high school math teacher who suffered a traumatic injury to both of his eyes 8 years ago, after being involved in a car accident. Since that time, he developed cataracts in both eyes (a common occurrence after trauma), and when he came to our VHI clinic in Guatemala, he saw 20/60 in his right eye and could not read any of the letters in the eye chart in his left eye.
About one year ago, Mynor lost his teaching job due to poor vision and has been struggling to make ends meet ever since. He was frustrated, both by his inability to adequately provide for his family and also for having to leave his students. During our field program in Guatemala earlier this month, our team of volunteers operated on the cataract in his left eye on at the beginning of the week and on the one in his right eye towards the end of the week. Not only were both surgeries successful, but Mynor now has artificial lenses implanted in both of his eyes that match his prescriptions. His surgeries were without complication, and his eyes looked great when doctors examined him the day after surgery -- he is expected to make a full recovery. Mynor is looking forward to returning to teaching and told our staff that he thinks his accident was part of God's plan, so that he could meet our team of volunteers. He gifted our team with delicious Guatemalan treats and gave everyone warm hugs as he walked away from our clinic with restored vision.
