September brought some exciting moments for YSR, alongside the continued changes and challenges across our projects.
A major highlight was seeing our Muay Thai coach Ali and our Paris coach coordinator Rahmat compete at the IFMA All Disciplines Senior World Championships in Kosovo as part of the Équipe Mondiale des Réfugiés. The whole YSR team was cheering them on from afar, and it was wonderful to welcome them back. They are now preparing for the European Championships in Paris, so be sure to follow their fights and show your support!
Across our three locations, activities continued to grow, with participation numbers rising well above our targets and new opportunities developing through our partnerships. In Athens, our new gym is taking shape, while in Paris, we welcomed a new climbing activity and continued building connections with local organisations.
We are also getting excited for our Global Run for Freedom campaign in October! From 24–31 October, you can join us for a 5K or 10K run from wherever you are in the world.
In Paris, September brought new experiences for the Paris team, with long-term student Sebratullah stepping into a coaching role for the first time and leading two boxing sessions at Point Virgule with support from Rahmat. We also launched climbing sessions with coach Mohammed in collaboration with Arkose, expanded our activities at La Maison dans le Jardin, and connected with new organisations at the Forum des Associations.
In Lesvos, September marked the end of our summer swimming classes, with support from our partner Terra Psy helping more women take part through childcare provision. We were also really happy that our football team had the opportunity to play against a local Greek team and connect with other players through sport. To round off the month, coach Safdar led a trail run featuring 6 km and 15 km races, with several YSR runners placing in their respective races. Well done to everyone who took part!
In Athens, With our new gym now open, the Athens team is working with participants, coaches, volunteers and interns to shape the next steps for the project. We are also developing new opportunities for basketball and volleyball through a collaboration with the municipality, while reconnecting with partners to bring more activities to the community, including fitness and yoga for women.
