During our teacher training sessions over the past few years, we’ve met some special people who are truly dedicated to their students and open to new ideas.
We’d like to introduce you to an experienced educator, Pashupati, who had never read aloud to students or even his own children. But we asked him to give it a try when he came to our training session. The results have been powerful.
A former teacher, Pashupati is now an assistant resource person for the local government in Shivapuri Rural Municipality, Nuwakot district. He visits each school in his municipality at least once a month. He has become a favorite of the children, known for teaching in a ‘fun’ way using songs and role play.
But he did not see the value in reading aloud, even with his own children. When they asked him to read to them, he told them to do homework or practice their handwriting instead. The training has changed his mind, however.
“Ever since participating in the training, I have been reading aloud to my son and daughter every evening. What I witnessed within two months is their increased attention and memory span. They have been re-telling the stories to their friends at school.”
“Both my kids are very restless and it shows when I have to help them with homework. But they are calm and patient when I read aloud to them. Now, during my regular visits to schools, I spend time with students reading aloud to them.”
