Review of 2017

It has been another busy and successful year for us and our partner schools in Kenya, but the last 12 months has not been withouts its challenges. Here are some of our highlights of 2017:

  • Our ‘Feeding Minds’ school lunch programme saw us deliver more than 500,000 meals in 2017, including the 1.5 millionth since the programme launched in September 2013. It was a difficult year as a result of the severe drought and soaring food prices, but careful management of our funds, reduction in portion sizes and a public fundraising appeal meant we were able to successfully deliver a daily term-time lunch to every pupil in our partner schools for another year, at a total cost of around £43,500."The food that African Promise supplies for our school is the only refuge that saves the life of the most vulnerable children in this part of the earth." (extract from a recent report from a headteacher) Read a full update on our lunch programme.
  • During the prolonged drought over the first three quarters of the year we delivered some 250,000 litres of clean water to maintain supplies for drinking and cooking in our partner schools. Thankfully, since September our project area has received consistent heavy rainfall which has replenished normal supplies including reserves of harvested rainwater.
  • In September we launched our first-ever promotional film which documents our work and its impact through footage from the schools and interviews with headteachers, teachers and parents. Production of this film was one of the most significant one-off financial investments we have ever made away from our actual projects and programmes, but we are hugely proud of the results and it is already generating additional interest in and funds for our work.
  • Having identified and selected our eighth partner school, Mkamenyi Primary, we are now in the early stages of planning a major redevelopment project which we hope to begin towards the latter stages of 2018! We anticipate this will cost in the region of £200-250k.

In 2018, we celebrate 10 years as a charity. In this milestone year we plan to:

  • Maintain our school lunch programme at its current level (approximately 500,000 meals to 2,700 children). Food price dependent, we anticipate it will cost roughly £43,000 for the year.
  • Continue to fund the salaries of additional, basically trained teachers (currently 17) at a cost of about £1,000-1,200 per post.
  • Make further capital investments in the infrastructure of our existing partner schools, especially at our original five partner schools which have fallen behind our two newest partner schools, Kisimenyi and Ngambenyi. We estimate a further £250,000 of investment is needed to similarly equip each school with the necessary core facilities.
