Worldfund's Educational Leadership Conference in Puebla

By Jim Citron | IAPE Program Director

Two hundred committed educators who have participated in Worldfund's IAPE and LISTO programs since 2008 packed into an auditorium and conference rooms to participate in Worldfund's first Educational Leadership Conference in the State of Puebla on May 23.

The conference aimed to strengthen the alliance between all Worldfund-trained English teachers and principals in the State, highlight the active role teachers and principals play in the transformation of the State’s education system, and provide timely professional development opportunities for all Worldfund participants.

After inaugural addresses by Secretary of Education Patricia Vázquez Mercado who reiterated the State's commitment to preparing more English teachers through IAPE, as well as LISTO Director Dolores González, and IAPE Director Jim Citron, participants were treated to timely sessions on topics such as the role English teachers and school principals play in the re-integration of migrant students returning to Mexico from the US, and the philosophical and humanistic underpinnings of the Rassias Method(R).

Lead researcher Rosángela Bando from the Inter-American Development Bank shared the ground-breaking results of a randomized control trial evaluation she authored on the impact of IAPE on teachers and students.

IAPE participants also participated in workshops to prepare them to present introductory workshops in the Rassias Method to their peers as part of their three-year service commitment, and to brush up on their own teaching skills, while LISTO principals participated in relevant round-table discussions.  Participants from both programs shared case studies success to round out the day.
