13 September Report

By Curtis Drafton | Veteran Rescue Team Leader

Just about every street resemble this
Just about every street resemble this

I don’t really know how to start this report.

If anyone reading this know the areas around Tallahassee, we came to a city called Port Saint Joe.

Its not the worst hit area, by far, but even here it’s a war zone type atmosphere. Our group of veterans have seen houses completely swept away, and the only thing left is the foundation.

When we were initially responding to Florence a few weeks ago, there was a sense of hope like you might be able to salvage some of the buildings (if you could get rid of the water) which in some places it is finally almost gone. But here, there’s not even a structure to save.

These people literally lost everything!

The cities next to here: Tallahassee, Mexico Beach and others are even worse. It’s something... almost beyond miraculous to see not only the house or business gone, but the foundation split in two or three pieces! Talking to a contractor and he said “it’s like the hurricane started to pull the slab up too”!

We usually give hope in these reports and say they’ll muster something together and get back to normal soon, but I’m unsure about saying that in most of these cases. But... we will help them get as close as possible with help from our friends and corporations, and a little elbow grease.

There is hope... but we’ll all have to come together!

Thanks for reading.
