STUDENTS MOBILIZED AGAINST CHOLERA

 by Louibert Meyer, Communications Officer

As part of the response to Hurricane Matthew, World Vision Haiti is mobilizing students from several schools in the Nippes Department to fight against vector-borne diseases such as Zika, dengue fever, malaria and mainly Cholera. The objective is to spread messages of good hygiene practices in the communities affected and put at risk by these diseases.

A team from the World Vision met with principals and students from thirty (30)schools in Miragoane and Petit-Trou-de-Nippes to sensitize themon the positive impact of this initiative. "It was with great delight that I encouraged the children of my establishment. Such initiative deserves the contribution of all the personalities ofthe community," says Mr. Rosenky Gouchy Desamours, Director of the College of “Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours” of Miragoane, one of the fifteen (15) schools targeted in Miragoane for this project.

A committee of seven (7) persons, including 4 students, 2professors and the Principal, is trained in each institution. The one-day training on hygiene and sanitation includes hand washing, treating and conserving drinking water, which is planned for each school. World Vision counts on the children for the sharing of the information with their classmates, their family and intheir community. A total of three thousand five hundred (3,500)households will be reached through this project.

"I will tell my parents that I am going to learn how to treat drinking water,"exclaims Emmanuel, a fifth grade student of the National Schoolof Miragoane.

In the absence of an adequate sanitary installation, the residents of the targeted areas make their needs in the sea polluting the environment, which favors the spread of diseases such as Cholera.
n the affected area. The schools will also benefit of a distribution of aquatabs and hygiene kits.

As of January 12, 2017 a total of 133,149 people have received emergency assistance from World Vision in the affected communities of La Gonave, Port-au-Prince, Nippes, Saint-Louis in the South, Grand Anse, and North

  • 78,375 people benefited from tarpaulins, blankets hygiene kits, bucket filters, mosquito nets, emergency lights
  • 116,226 people benefited from cash vouchers, seed distribution, and school feedings
  • 103,115 people attended hygiene promotion activities
  • 2,251 children received psychosocial support by attending Child-Friendly Spaces
