Hurricane Harvey made landfall on August 25th, 2017 as a Category 4 hurricane, causing devastating damage and flooding to Southeast Texas. Torrential rain over the following 6 days left millions of people in Southern Texas trying to evacuate in treacherous conditions, and over 2,000 water rescues were performed. The Houston area set a record for rainfall from a single storm anywhere in the continental United States; 27 trillion gallons of rain fell over the state of Texas.
Hurricane Harvey is considered to be the costliest disaster to hit the United States with a projected $180 billion in damages. The storm created massive flooding and destroyed an estimated 40,000 homes, left 35,000+ people seeking temporary shelter, 300,000 people without power, and claimed the lives of at least 60 people.
WORLD VISION’S RESPONSE
World Vision is responding to the needs of the most vulnerable families through working with local community partners and the distribution of emergency relief supplies. Through the generous donation of a church partner, World Vision has the use of a warehouse in downtown Houston and plans to maintain an active presence in the region for 12 months. As the relief efforts transition into recovery and rebuilding efforts, World Vision’s programming and resources will shift according to partner and community needs. We plan to assist over 300,000 people in the next year.
The major component of World Vision’s programming during the recovery and rebuilding phases will continue to center around equipping community partners with essential resources to get to people in need. These resources will move from relief supplies, to hygiene and intermediate supplies, into building materials and school supplies for long-term community sustainability.
