COHI's team is watching Hurricane Florence closely and we are ready to respond. Our allies living and working in the communities directly in the storm's path are bracing for flooding, storm surges and high winds. COHI will respond by prioritizing the unique needs of vulnerable women and children, and specifically people of color and the LGBTQI community. Our response will focus on meeting the needs of our allies in the area to provide women and children with the services and resources they need.
It's hurricane season. As we know all too well here at COHI HQ in Texas, natural disasters like hurricanes disrupt healthcare services, electricity, food distribution placing vulnerable women and children directly in the eye of a storm of a different sort.
COHI aims to raise $50,000 to: -Hire a team of evacuee women to coordinate COHI's relief efforts within the shelters -Provide cash grants to evacuees to cover emergency housing and transportation costs for vulnerable women and children who've lost their homes and vehicles in the storm - Provide cash grants to evacuees to cover costs associated with labor and delivery support and medical care for medically fragile kids
Thousands are predicted to be affected first by the storm surge and then by flooding in the coming days and weeks. COHI is equipped and prepared to respond, specifically working with people of color and the LGBTQI community.
