Today is day 3 of our Hurricane Dorian Response mission.
We have seen critical flooding (but not catastrophic) in the North Myrtle Beach area. The main area of damage appears to be high wind damage that caused large trees to come down (some as thick as 3 feet in diameter), power lines and poles to fall and transformers to blow on power lines.
There is no electricity for about a 5 mile radius, but crews are out working now that water has gone down some.
The area we are in now is called Grand Strands (Little River) which is East NorthEast (ENE) of North Myrtle Beach. We are here because there are reports of at least 2 tornados touching down, on top of the hurricane winds which came at a Category 2 (around 105-110).
The damage appears to match as well: there is heavy, irregular damage to a few communities, then hurricane type damage, then about 2 miles up the road on Route 17 more irregular, heavy damage (which is consistent with tornados that touch down or skip).
About 75 homes match this patter of heavy damage: 20+ have no insurance (which we recorded a few families telling us).
We will do our best to help them here all day and then make our way closer to Calabash.
