Yemen remains the scene of one
of the most severe humanitarian
crises of our time. After nearly
a decade of war, the country's
infrastructure has largely collapsed.
17.8 million people need medical assistance
Around half of all health facilities
are no longer functional, while
approximately 17.8 million people are
in urgent need of medical assistance.
This group includes 3.2 million
internally displaced persons, as well
as a disproportionately high number of
women, children, the elderly, and people
with disabilities.
The partner organizations of Aktion
Deutschland Hilft, ADRA Germany and
ADRA Yemen, have been working closely
together in Yemen since 2012, focusing
primarily on health, nutrition, and
drinking water supply. In the southern
regions of Lahj, Taiz, and Abyan, the
alliance organization is currently
implementing a program to strengthen
the Yemeni healthcare system.
Health as a Key to Stability
These regions are among the country's
poorest and urgently require support
to meet growing humanitarian needs.
Running until 2027, the aid project
aims to strengthen the healthcare
system in the long term and better
prepare the population for crises.
A key component of the project is the
rehabilitation of health facilities:
four hospitals are undergoing structural
renovations, being equipped with
furniture and medical technology, and
modernized to ensure barrier-free or
accessible facilities that take the
needs of people with disabilities into
account.
To strengthen mental health alongside
physical well-being, 280 professionals
are being trained in psychosocial
support. They provide care to individuals
traumatized by war, displacement, and
the loss of loved ones, helping them
develop coping strategies.
An Essential Component of Health
Since access to sufficient drinking
water is essential for health, ADRA
teams are repairing water points and
sewage networks to prevent diseases
such as cholera. This includes training
local personnel who will maintain and
manage the repaired water points and
monitor water quality in the future.
As scarce resources can fuel conflict,
aid workers are also training 65
community and local government
representatives in mediation and peaceful
conflict resolution.
