A cholera outbreak has occurred
in the Greater Yirol region of
South Sudan’s Lakes State. “So
far, 293 cases and twelve deaths
have been recorded; the regional
Ministry of Health warned on Monday
that the situation could worsen,”
reports Program Manager for the partner
organization of Aktion Deutschland Hilft,
Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe.
Teams working on water and sanitation
“The humanitarian situation in South Sudan
is already catastrophic; two-thirds of the
population require humanitarian assistance.
The consequences of a further spread of the
cholera epidemic which has been simmering
since 2024 would be devastating. Our teams
are already working around the clock to
improve water and sanitation facilities
in the affected areas. This is essential
to curb the rapid spread of the disease.
However, we urgently need donations to
further expand our efforts,” says Program
Manager for Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe.
Cholera Outbreak: Urgent Aid Needed
Every minute counts: “Cholera is highly
contagious and can lead to severe illness
within a few days, especially among children
and the elderly,” he explains.
“To prevent further infections and deaths,
additional and above all, rapid humanitarian
support is required. This includes measures
such as hygiene training, the distribution
of disinfectants, and improved medical care
for those affected. We are monitoring the
situation closely and are prepared to expand
our relief efforts wherever possible.”
Organization Has Been Providing Support in
South Sudan for 15 Years
Help has been active in South Sudan since
2011. In addition to improving the nutritional
situation, a key focus of the relief efforts
is strengthening water and healthcare services.
To limit the spread of cholera, Help improves
access to clean drinking water and constructs
or repairs water points and sanitation
facilities. At the same time, the organization
distributes hygiene supplies and educates
families on hygiene practices and infection
prevention. Working alongside local health
authorities, Help also supports health
facilities with medical supplies and strengthens
staff capabilities through training, enabling
faster care for the sick and the prevention of
further infections.
