Teenage pregnancy can create a difficult cycle involving interrupted education, poverty, limited employment opportunities and early responsibility for children. When a teenage mother is subsequently abandoned, these challenges can become even more complex.
F SSIBU Mission Foundation works in Mukono and Eastern Uganda to address these vulnerabilities through education, mentorship, sexual and reproductive health awareness, skills development and livelihood empowerment.
Sexual and reproductive health education helps young people understand HIV prevention, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy prevention, healthy relationships and responsible decision-making. This knowledge can help reduce vulnerability to repeated unintended pregnancies and other health risks.
However, information alone is not enough. Young mothers also need practical alternatives and opportunities. Vocational training can help them develop skills in tailoring, hairdressing, computer use, electrical work and modern farming.
Economic empowerment is particularly important because poverty can increase dependence and vulnerability. When young mothers develop livelihood skills, they can explore ways of generating income and supporting their families.
Mentorship reinforces these interventions by helping participants set goals and make informed choices.
Donor support enables the Foundation to bring these services closer to vulnerable communities. Contributions can support training equipment, educational materials, facilitators, mentorship sessions and livelihood initiatives.
The ultimate goal is not simply to respond to teenage motherhood after it occurs. It is to help young mothers develop the knowledge, skills and resilience required to avoid repeating cycles of vulnerability.
When a mother becomes empowered, her child gains a stronger foundation. When several families become stronger, communities become more resilient.
Donors therefore have an opportunity to invest in prevention, empowerment and long-term community transformation.
Together, we can help young mothers in Mukono and Eastern Uganda move beyond cycles of poverty and create healthier and more hopeful futures.
