Poverty can make abandonment particularly devastating for teenage mothers. Without income or family support, young mothers may struggle to provide food, healthcare, clothing and other necessities for their children. Economic dependence can also prevent them from making independent decisions about their lives.
F SSIBU Mission Foundation responds by connecting vulnerable teenage mothers in Mukono and Eastern Uganda with practical skills and livelihood opportunities. The goal is to help them develop the capacity to earn income and gradually become more self-reliant.
Our vocational initiatives provide opportunities to learn skills including tailoring, hairdressing, computer literacy, electrical engineering and modern farming. These areas can provide young mothers with practical knowledge that can be applied within their communities.
Computer training is particularly valuable because digital skills can open access to modern employment, entrepreneurship and information. Young mothers can gain confidence using technology while developing skills that may improve their future economic opportunities.
Modern farming also provides a practical pathway for mothers living in communities where agriculture remains an important source of household livelihood. Through improved agricultural knowledge, young mothers can explore productive ways of using available resources.
Donor funding is essential in making these opportunities accessible. Many vulnerable mothers cannot afford training fees, equipment, learning materials or transportation. Contributions can therefore remove barriers that would otherwise keep them excluded.
The impact of economic empowerment reaches beyond the individual participant. When a young mother earns an income, she can contribute toward food, healthcare, education and other needs for her child. Increased household stability can also reduce vulnerability to exploitation and harmful dependency.
Every donor contribution can help create a pathway from poverty to possibility.
By investing in skills and livelihoods, donors are helping young mothers in Mukono and Eastern Uganda move beyond survival and toward a future where they can work, provide, make decisions and build stronger families.
