Abandonment can leave teenage mothers carrying emotional pain, uncertainty and a diminished sense of confidence. Many may question whether they can still achieve their dreams while caring for a child.
F SSIBU Mission Foundation uses mentorship as an important pathway for rebuilding confidence among vulnerable teenage mothers in Mukono and Eastern Uganda.
Through regular mentorship sessions, young mothers can receive guidance on personal development, parenting, relationships, goal setting, decision-making, sexual and reproductive health and responsible planning for the future.
Mentorship provides something that material assistance alone cannot always provide: encouragement and direction. A young mother needs someone to remind her that motherhood does not eliminate her potential.
Mentors can help participants identify their strengths, understand their challenges and develop realistic goals. These conversations can complement vocational training by helping young mothers remain focused on completing their skills development.
Sexual and reproductive health education is also integrated into empowerment efforts. Participants can learn about HIV prevention, sexually transmitted infections, healthy relationships, pregnancy prevention and appropriate health services.
Donor support enables these mentorship activities to reach mothers who may otherwise remain isolated. Funding can assist with training materials, facilitators, community sessions, transportation and follow-up activities.
The transformation begins when a young woman starts believing that her future can be different.
A participant who once felt rejected can become a learner. A learner can become a skilled worker. A skilled worker can become an income earner. An income earner can become a stronger provider for her child.
This is the power of sustained mentorship combined with practical opportunity.
By investing in mentorship, donors are helping young mothers in Mukono and Eastern Uganda regain confidence, develop purpose and take meaningful steps toward self-reliance.
