Vocational Skills, Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

Economic vulnerability is one of the greatest challenges facing abandoned teenage mothers. Without education, employment, or financial support, many struggle to meet their children's basic needs and may become dependent on unsafe relationships or exploitative situations. Our economic empowerment activities aim to equip young mothers with practical skills that can create pathways toward sustainable livelihoods.

We support access to vocational and practical skills training based on local opportunities and individual interests. Depending on available resources and partnerships, training may include tailoring, hairdressing, crafts, catering, agriculture, small-scale enterprise, digital skills, financial literacy, and other income-generating skills. The objective is to move beyond short-term assistance and help young mothers develop capabilities that can generate longer-term economic opportunities.

Mentorship accompanies skills development. Young mothers learn basic entrepreneurship, budgeting, saving, customer care, business planning, and responsible management of small enterprises. Where possible, we connect trained beneficiaries with community networks, markets, mentors, and opportunities that can help them apply their new skills.

The impact can be transformational. A young mother who develops a reliable livelihood can improve her ability to provide food, clothing, healthcare, and education for her child. Economic independence can also strengthen her confidence and reduce vulnerability to exploitation and harmful dependency.

Donor support can turn skills training into sustainable opportunity. Funding can help cover training materials, learning costs, starter kits, mentorship, and livelihood support for deserving beneficiaries. Rather than simply providing temporary relief, donors can help young mothers acquire tools and knowledge that continue creating value long after a particular project ends.

Our goal is to help every supported teenage mother move from survival toward self-reliance—becoming not only a caregiver, but also a skilled, confident, and economically empowered member of her co
