Summary

Project PAL is an award-winning initiative by the Waer Waters Charity Foundation that eliminates educational barriers for marginalized children in the Niger Delta through mother-tongue instruction, solar-powered digital hubs, and transparent assessment frameworks. Recognized as a 2026 UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize Laureate, the project advances Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 7 by combining indigenous language learning with clean energy solutions.

Challenge

Children in riverine and underserved communities across the Niger Delta face severe foundational literacy gaps caused by the disruption of educational infrastructure due to local conflicts and insecurity. These challenges are compounded by acute security threats that restrict safe movement and evening studying, as well as displacement and instability that force children into unfamiliar learning environments where they miss out on native mother-tongue instruction.

Solution

Project PAL solves these educational challenges through three strategic pillars: delivering foundational literacy and numeracy in immediate local languages to strengthen comprehension before transitioning to English; establishing off-grid, solar-powered study centers equipped with digital materials and evening lighting to overcome remote power deficits; and implementing simplified assessment tools that allow educators and parents to track learning outcomes in real time.

Long-Term Impact

Project PAL will secure long-term educational equity and resilience for marginalized children in the Niger Delta by permanently eliminating foundational literacy and numeracy gaps. By scaling off-grid, solar-powered literacy hubs, the project establishes sustainable, clean-energy learning infrastructure that permanently solves local power deficits in remote communities. Furthermore, institutionalizing mother-tongue instruction preserves indigenous languages as tools for lifelong cognitive growth
