Fruit provides important nutrition for children, so we decided to plant 120 fruit tree seedings at House of Hope. The seedlings included avocados, mangos, papayas, guavas, mulberries, jack fruit, passion fruits, loquats, oranges, lemons, and star fruit.
A group of volunteers and I brought the tree seedlings by bus for a 5 1/2 hour bus ride from Mukono to House of Hope in Nakatete. It was hot, dusty, and 100% worth it.
As the House of Hope property is on a hill, made out of clay, House of Hope Director Jenifer brought in a truckload of coffee husks that we used as fertilizer as they are high in nitrogen. We also used the available goat dung, and EVERYONE pitched in to help.
Planting fruit trees is not an imediate gratification, it is a plan for the future. We are investing in the future of House of Hope and the future of these children. Together, with help from our donors, the hopeless are hopeful.
