In Cosmo City, South Africa, a 49-year old woman made a decision that empowered her to make healthy lifestyle changes and improve her health – she had her blood pressure checked.
At the request of HOPE Centre staff, this woman allowed them to come to her community from neighboring Zandspruit to conduct diabetes and blood pressure screenings. Near the end of the screenings, and virtually on a whim, she decided to take a simple blood pressure test. She was surprised to learn her blood pressure was more than 100 points above normal – making her a prime candidate for a stroke. In response, HOPE Centre staff worked with her to immediately map out a health plan that included diet, fitness and proper attention from health professionals.
Months later, Project HOPE’s CEO, Dr. John Howe visited the HOPE Centre and had the opportunity to meet this woman and hear her story. Since her screening results, she had lost weight and brought her blood pressure back within a healthy range. She took what she learned to get her family in shape, with supportive guidance from other programs available at the HOPE Centre, and has committed herself to advocating the benefits of the the Centre to her community.
Thanks to your generous support, the HOPE Centre is helping individuals like this woman take control of their health and improve the prevention, treatment and management of chronic diseases.
