Dear Donor,

I hope this message finds you well.

On behalf of Asante Aid for Children and Schools in Africa, I am pleased to share with you our latest Homes of Hopes report. This initiative was born out of an urgent need in Kilifi County, where over 1,000 families live in unsafe conditions, many affected by disability and poverty.

Together with our partners, including the Shelter Equity Team, we have already built 5 fully equipped homes, each with solar lighting, toilet and bathroom facilities, a community borehole powered by solar pumps, and bicycles for transport. These homes have transformed the lives of more than 300 people, while the wider Manarani community now enjoys free access to clean water.

This is just the beginning. With your support, we can scale this impact:

  • USD 5,000 builds one complete home with solar, sanitation, water, and transport.
  • Every dollar counts. Recent contributions helped us purchase 2 tons of sand, proving that small gifts create big change.

We invite you to read the detailed report below and consider joining us in this cause. Together, we can ensure that every family in Kilifi has a safe, dignified place to call home.

With gratitude and hope,

Nicholas O. Ondiek

HOMES OF HOPES Report

Executive Summary

Kilifi County is experiencing a severe housing crisis, with thousands of families living in unsafe shanty structures that expose children to harsh weather, disease, and displacement. As one of Kenya’s poorest regions, with a poverty rate of 49.2%, households face compounded challenges, including a lack of clean water, inadequate sanitation, and insecure shelter. These conditions leave families highly vulnerable to climate shocks and deepen cycles of extreme poverty.

The Homes of Hopes initiative seeks to address this crisis by providing safe, sustainable housing solutions integrated with clean water access, sanitation facilities, solar energy, and mobility support. By combining shelter with essential services, the program aims to restore dignity, improve health outcomes, and build resilience for vulnerable families across Kilifi County.

Key Highlights

  • Poverty rate in Kilifi County stands at 49.2%, among the highest in Kenya.
  • Over 1,000 families were urgently identified as needing safe housing.
  • Project launched in August 2025 and commissioned in November 2025.
  • Initial support from GlobalGiving donors provided USD 26, enabling the purchase of 2 tons of sand.
  • 5 homes built, transforming the lives of 300+ people and providing clean water to the wider Manarani community.

1. Background

In late July 2025, together with our partners, we conducted a fact-finding mission across Kilifi County. During several stopovers, we witnessed the magnitude of need among families living in dire conditions, many of whom had suffered amputations from snake bites and lacked safe shelter. The urgency was overwhelming, with more than 1,000 families identified as requiring immediate housing support.

2. Partnership & Action

With the support of the Shelter Equity Team, we launched the Homes of Hopes initiative in August 2025. By November 2025, we commissioned 5 fully equipped homes, each designed to restore dignity and provide sustainable living conditions.

Each home includes:

  1. Solar lighting for safe, reliable energy.
  2. Toilet and bathroom facilities for improved hygiene.
  3. Community borehole with solar-powered pump for clean water access.
  4. Bicycle for transport, enabling mobility and livelihood opportunities.

3. Impact Achieved

  • 5 homes commissioned with partners in attendance.
  • 300+ lives transformed through improved housing and access to clean water.
  • The entire Manarani community now draws free water from the borehole, reducing water scarcity and improving health.

4. Challenges & Lessons

  • The need remains vast, with 1,000+ families still awaiting safe shelter.
  • Every contribution matters: GlobalGiving donated USD 26, which enabled us to purchase 2 tons of sand, proving that even small gifts create tangible progress.
  • Best practice: community-driven design ensures sustainability, as families actively participate in construction design and upkeep.

5. Next Steps & Appeal

We invite donors and partners to join us in scaling this initiative.

  • Cost of one complete home: USD 5,000
  • Each home includes solar lighting, a toilet and bathroom, a bicycle, and water access.
  • Every dollar counts—your support directly builds dignity, safety, and hope for Kilifi families.
