Why Are Cats So Spooky at Halloween?

By Lauren click | Project manager

Every October, cats, especially black ones, —pop up everywhere. They’re on decorations, candy wrappers, and costumes. But have you ever wondered why?

It goes back centuries. In medieval Europe, black cats were unfairly linked to witches and superstitions. Folklore said witches could transform into cats to sneak around unnoticed, especially at night. These myths stuck and black cats became Halloween icons.

But Here’s the Scary Part…

  • Black cats are still harder to adopt out, even today.
  • Some are adopted around Halloween for the “aesthetic”  and then discarded.
  • Sadly, there are still rare cases of cruelty around this time, especially targeting black or outdoor cats.

At our rescue, we take extra precautions in October to keep our kitties safe. And we always remind people: cats aren’t costumes or decorations, they’re family.

So as you decorate with cobwebs and pumpkins this season, don’t forget the cats who inspired the legend. Adopt responsibly. Keep pets indoors. And let’s treat every kitty, spooky or not, with the love they deserve.

Happy Halloween from all of us (and our feline friends)!
