Hoarding Cats

By Lauren Click | Project Manager

In the United States, each state has its own laws regarding how many animals one can have in their home. While in some states you are not legally allowed to own more than two animals without having a permit from authorities, other states permit more animals per household. While most people who own pets keep them at a reasonable number regardless of any specific state laws, we as a rescue often find ourselves involved in animal hoarding situations. An animal hoarder is defined as someone who has accumulated a large number of animals who: 1) fails to provide minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, and vet care; 2) fails to act on the deteriorating condition of the animals.

Our rescue was recently called upon to assist in a cat hoarding situation in Anaheim. Someone had reached out to the rescue to help when it was discovered there were 40 cats living in the home and their caretaker was unable to properly care for them. A hoarding situation is difficult for rescues because we don’t know how healthy the animals are, if they are socialized, etc.. Oftentimes we have found that the cats are not well taken care of and not socialized which means the rescue needs to put in extra time and money to rehabilitate the cats so that they can become adoptable.

The good news is that from this Anaheim home, we were able to rescue 25 of the cats so far! 19 of the cats have gone directly into our care and we were able to recruit another rescue to take in 6. The remaining cats will continue to live in the home but have all been spayed/neutered so they will no longer be able to populate. All 19 of the cats that are in our care have been fully vetted and 6 have already been adopted! The remaining ones are currently still in our care waiting to find their forever homes!

It is your donations that allow us to help out in situations such as this and we are incredibly grateful. Thank you!
