Summary

At Dar, we're devoted to welcoming sanctuary seekers into our community, offering support and fostering inclusion. We're seeking a dedicated space to meet, plan projects, share skills, and store resources like the free shop. This space will also host language classes, extended drop-ins, and voluntary opportunities. Currently, we rely on volunteers and move between venues, limiting our presence. A centralized space will be a true home for our community. Support us by making a small donation.

Challenge

We're trying to address a simple, yet heartfelt problem: when sanctuary seekers come to Darlington, they often feel alone, traumatized, and disconnected from the community. With language barriers and restrictive work laws, their daily struggles are compounded, all while living on 5.37 a day and worrying about family back home. At Dar, our volunteers offer a friendly face every week, but we're a humble operation without a dedicated space.

Solution

This project empowers us to establish a foundation with funding for the next 3 years, providing a home for both sanctuary seekers and the local community. While it may not completely solve all issues, it plays a crucial role in crafting a community hub for social interactions, cooking, projects, and as a workspace for our volunteers. The space offers sanctuary seekers an opportunity to host their cultural celebrations and organize social events, fostering a sense of belonging and community.

Long-Term Impact

With around 50 active volunteers and approx 250 service users, our charity continues to grow. Our ability to provide services is limited by resources in both funding and property. Establishing a base is pivotal to our vision, enabling us to: Store donations, aiding families in settling into their new homes. Provide a central hub for the community and local sanctuary seekers to access our services. Facilitate projects like cooking and craft classes, utilising skills and build communities.
