We've been busy at the U&I Care program at the Boys' Home!
In addition to special education classes, training in hygiene and physiotherapy, the boys have been engaged in a bunch of vocational activities.
Their days are now filled with fun, skill-building activities like painting pots, making jute mats, basket weaving and bottle decorating. But the favorite new activity this time around has been gardening. The small plot of land in front of the Home has become a garden where several vegetables are being grown.
"We had our first crop of green beans," says Jay, U&I's manager at the Care Home, adding that the kids and he have planted pumpkin, spinach, bananas and other vegetables.
Nazeem, one of the boys at the Home, has taken a special interest in the garden. Even though he doesn't express himself verbally, he has taken ownership of the little plot of land, instructing the other boys on how to water the plants or how to plant a sapling.
"It's been a wonderful transformation - Nazeem's interest in gardening is now helping him in other areas of his life. He is much more engaged with his puzzles and spends less time by himself," says Jay.
U&I makes sure that each of the boys at the Home are engaged productively through the day. But more than that our managers find skills and talents in the boys. We make sure to nurture those skills. We make sure to show the boys that they matter.
