A Brief Quarterly Report on "Home away from Home"

By Akhil ranjan Panda | Executive Director

Though sometimes overlooked, seemingly underappreciated and at times taken for granted, senior citizens have a lot to offer us. To render the services to the elderly people, Shakti has been running an Old Age Home with support of “Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India” as Welfare and health care is one of the focus areas of the Organisation.
SHAKTI Organisation has been working on the issues of elderly people for last twelve years. As a part of its effort for elderly people, SHAKTI began working on two types of initiatives, viz. Institutional Care and Non-Institutional Care focusing on welfare of the elderly people in the Rayagada District.

  Non-InstitutionalCare:

Under non-institutional care, we are helping them in getting old age pensions, legal counselling, cataract operations, Aadhar card and helping them in enrolling in emergency feeding programme. Our field staffs regularly visit elderly person those are in need in our operational areas, counsel them and their family members. We also provide them psychosocial care. We conduct meetings to create social awareness about the problems of the elderly people, among the younger generation and in society.

 Institutional Care:

Under Institutional care, we provide support to needy old people (25 inmates) with nutritious food and other requirements including medicines to keep them physically fit. They get entertainment and refreshment by watching programmes on T.V, listening radio, playing various indoor games, musical instruments, singing and offering prayers. The inmates are also undergoing regular health check-up by the doctor. We also celebrate national festivals and other Indian festivals.

With support of received amount we had already purchased one refrigerator and then after we didn't have received any more financial support. But as always we focus on taking good care of our inmates and we do so. Besides providing basic necessities, as mentioned we try to keep them happy and entertaining and on 1st October 2018 we have also celebrated Senior Citizens Day with great amusement accompanied with Health Check up of the inmates.

Gratification: We are very much thankful to the donors who have supported this programme.
