"Choosing Hope HIV Free Childhood

By Patricia Estefania Lucano Hernandez | Fundarasing Coordinator

I remember the moment I found out I was pregnant.
Joy and fear arrived at the same time.

I live with HIV.
And in that instant, my first thought was not about myself — it was about my baby.

Would my child be born healthy?
Would my diagnosis define their future before they even took their first breath?

For many women like me, motherhood comes with an extra weight. Alongside the excitement of feeling a heartbeat inside our bodies, we carry the fear of stigma, judgment, and the uncertainty that surrounds HIV. Society often forgets that we are not statistics — we are mothers, daughters, women with dreams and hopes for our children.

But knowledge changes everything.

Through specialized medical care, emotional support, and constant accompaniment, I learned something powerful: HIV does not have to be my baby’s story. With proper treatment and adherence, the virus can be prevented from passing from mother to child.

Every medical appointment became an act of love.
Every pill I took was a promise.
Every session of emotional support reminded me that I was not alone.

I learned how to care for myself so I could protect the life growing inside me. I learned that asking for help is also a form of strength. Most importantly, I learned that hope is stronger than fear.

Today, I wait for my baby’s arrival with a different heart — still cautious, but full of hope. I imagine a future where my child runs freely, laughs loudly, and grows without the shadow of a virus they never chose.

My dream is simple, yet profound:
To hold my baby in my arms and know that they were born free of HIV.

This is what it means to be a mother living with HIV — choosing love every day, even in the face of uncertainty, and believing that a healthy beginning is possible.

Because every child deserves a life that starts with hope.
