HerRight: A story of access, resilience, and hope

By Karla McDermott | Director

Right now, being a girl in Afghanistan means living in a world where your future can feel uncertain and your access to educaiton, once a given, is no longer guaranteed. Across the country, millions of girls are being shut out of formal learning. Doors to classrooms have closed. Pathways to university, careers, and independence have been cut off. For many, dreams are being placed on hold indefinitely.

But in the midst of this reality, something powerful is still happening.

Through Brave Future's HerRight program, girls are finding a way forward.

What began as a response to crisis has become something much more, a lifeline. With the unwavering support of a global community that believes deeply in the power of education, we are ensuring that Afghan girls can continue learning, growing, and building futures that extend far beyond their current circumstances.

For many of our students, the journey starts with access.

A laptop placed into the hands of a girl who had no way to join a class. A data package that allows her to log in, to connect, to learn. A small monthly stipend that relieves just enough pressure so she can focus, not on survival, but on her studies.

These may seem like simple interventions, but for our students, they are transformative. They are the difference between exclusion and opportunity.

And HerRight goes beyond access.

Inside virtual classrooms and across time zones, students are preparing for what comes next. They are attending university application workshops, learning how to navigate international systems, and beginning to imagine themselves studying abroad. They are building their English proficiency through TOEFL preparation, with exam costs covered so that nothing stands in their way.

Step by step, they are reclaiming their futures.

Now, as exam season approaches, their dedication is clear. Many of our learners have performed strongly in their mock exams, a reflection not only of their academic ability, but of their perseverance. These are young women studying through uncertainty, through power cuts and challenges most students never have to consider.

And still, they show up.

They log in. They learn. They keep going.

Their resilience is nothing short of extraordinary.

As we look ahead, our commitment remains unwavering. We will continue to support each girl not only academically, but emotionally and practically, ensuring she has the tools, guidance, and encouragement she needs to succeed.

This work is only possible because of a community that refuses to look away.

And right now, that support matters more than ever.

Because together, we are doing more than providing education.

We are protecting hope. We are restoring opportunity.

And we are standing beside a generation of Afghan girls as they shape their own futures.
