There are two major health challenges facing babies and young children in Honduras -- undernutrition and impure drinking water. "Hens Hatching Hope" & "It Takes Two to Make a Liter of Difference" addresses both of these concerns: (1) We support women run micro-businesses that raise eggs, and then we provide the eggs to children from 6 to 24 months; (2) We teach families that they can purify their drinking water by using "2 drops of bleach per liter of water."
The children of Southern Intibuca, a place of unforgiving poverty and scarce opportunity, are literally wasting away. Shoulder to Shoulder's data reveal that almost 40% of children less than 5 years of age are stunted (this is a higher rate than Haiti). About half are anemic, 13% are underweight, and 3% are wasting. In addition, water is scarce and is often contaminated. This leads to frequent bouts of diarrhea and stomach ailments which overwhelming affect babies and young children.
Nutrition: Eggs have been shown to be a cost-effective solution to fighting malnutrition in developing countries. Our project will find, and support, one woman in each community who has the desire to raise chickens. Mothers will be given a ticket for 30 free eggs each month. Clean Water: Families will be taught that 2 drops of bleach per liter of water will purify the water and make it safe to drink. They will be provided with education; a large bucket with a spout; and a dropper.
This project is a WIN-WIN: "Hens Hatching Hope" provides children with needed nutrients through eating an egg a day. And, the women who raise the hens receive revenue from their eggs sales to both Shoulder to Shoulder and local customers. "It Take Two to Make a Liter of Difference" teaches families that they can afford to purifiy their drinking water. And, clean water improves the health of babies and everyone in the family.
