Temporary & Permanent schools for Nepalese youth

Construction on temporary school
Construction on temporary school

On May 12th 2015, Nepal was struck by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake, the epicenter of which was in the district adjacent to the Solukhumbu Region where Edge of Seven works. In this region alone, the earthquake destroyed up to 90% of the homes and 250 school buildings.

Edge of Seven is committing to building SEVEN temporary learning centers and SEVEN permanent schools in the Everest Region to ensure that the cycle of education continues in these rural communities...

With an overwhelming amount of work to do in reconstructing villages and rebuilding schools, children’s advocates fear that thousands of children will never return to school. In addition, women and girls are particularly vulnerable to human trafficking during this time of devastation since the school system has been shattered.

Our local communities and partner, The Small World, have asked us to support the immediate rebuilding efforts by completing the Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) to ensure that all children return to a safe learning environment as quickly as possible. Children need to be in schools and teachers need to keep their jobs in these remote, rural communities so that the system of education continues through the monsoon, through the fall and through the winter. We cannot allow the education system to collapse.

By the end of 2015 we'll complete 7 temporary centers, and by the end of 2016, these TLCs will be replaced with earthquake-resistant permanent school buildings. This project we're calling 7plus7 and is a major undertaking for Edge of Seven — but the need in these remote areas is greater and the potential for them to fade with the headlines means we have to keep up the momentum and scale up our work.

We're working closely with our implementing partner and the communities themselves to build their capacity, elevate their sense of ownership of these projects and empower them to build, maintain, repair and eventually replace all these buildings that we're helping them with. That spirit of cooperation, collaboration, and community is vital to the #RebuildNepal effort. I hope you will partner with us in this effort.

We will be in the Solukhumbu this fall as we check on the progress of the 7 TLC structures and break ground on the first 2 (of 7) permanent school classroom buildings. We'll post more pictures here and on our website.

We'll continue to update here and on our website at http://www.eddgeofseven.org/7plus7
