As readers all know, we here at DEPDC value fresh, local and organic food greatly. And now during the hot season, we can enjoy a lot of fresh fruits. One of the many fruit trees here is the Jack fruit tree. This is the largest tree-borne fruit, which can be up to 35 kg. The fruit is strange and wobbly, green and prickly. The fruit has small, yellow pedals inside, covering seeds. The pedals are what you eat and the taste is lightly sweet, the structure is smooth and inside like soft treads. And this amazing fruit grows here on the grounds, free from pesticides and other chemicals and free for the children to eat. The hot season also brings other ripe fruits, like the Mangosteen and Rambutan. But unfortunately the food that we grow isn’t enough for the children. That is just why we are so grateful for all of your donations! These donations help us to provide food for these children, good, nutritious food.
And we don’t just pick the ripe fruits; the cooking program increases student’s responsibility, self-sufficiency, and life skills through hands-on training. Students are given the opportunity to share their skills from home with their peers as well as expand their own skillsets. Although many students already have basic cooking skills, these skills are sharpened and built upon.
