Poverty always connects with hunger; hunger which causes poverty itself. Poverty is the major factor contributing to the food insecurity and children are the most vulnerable victims. Child malnutrition can lead to greater poverty by reducing their ability to learn and preventing physical and mental growth. Child malnutrition caused by poverty is not unusual in the Greater Mekong Region, the Half Day School Lunch Program provides our students every day with dietary supplements and fortified foods during lunch time in order to help combat and hopefully wipe out poverty and malnutrition. Besides this, the program offers the students the opportunity to learn to cook various Thai foods and basic cooking skills. These skills are not only important for the girls in our school, but also for the boys, as it helps them to become more independent, but also more dependable for their families. So you can see how education can change many lives.
Last a couple of weeks, Korean volunteer, Sohee Lee, came here and cooked Korean desserts for children in the Half Day School. She commented on the lunch program: “I am so glad to cook for children in here. When I was working at a restaurant in Korea, I always dream about using my talent and introduce Korean foods to foreigners in a charitable way. When I see these children, how they love to eat my food and enjoy cooking with me, I am joyful and happy. I heard some children are not able to have regular breakfast and dinner due to the lack of funds in their homes and they rely on the food from the HDS lunch program. When I come back to Korea, I will not stop showing my interest for this great cause and donate money regularly for these children; our children. “
At the Half Day School, the teachers and staff understand that proper nutrition is key to not only create positive educational outcomes, but also help eradicate poverty. However, it is not possible to provide healthy lunches for all of our children at HDS without your supporting and donation.
$10 Will provide lunch, for one student, for a whole month.
$16 Will provide lunch, for two students, for a whole month.
$35 Will provide fresh fruit, for every child, for three days out of the week.

Finally, we at DEPDC and all of our students would like to thank all former, current, and future donors, whose kind donations made DEPDC's work possible and enable us to provide healthy lunches for all of our children at HDS.
