Help Us Keep Rescuing Refugees in Peril at Sea

Our second mission with the Sea-Eye 4 in the Central Mediterranean has come to an end. The Sea-Eye ship, including our boat, Mo Chara, has been granted a port of safety in Sicily and all those rescued have disembarked. In total, during the two missions in our new operational area, our crews have rescued 445 survivors. Mo Chara will now undergo repairs before heading back out onto the water again. 

While we make sure everything is ready for our upcoming mission, it is important to remember that people continue dying on a daily basis in the Mediterranean. Only this year, at least

• 1,241 people have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean attempting to reach Europe in 2021 alone. That's three times more than this time last year, and,
• 1,029 persons have died or gone missing in the Central Mediterranean route, the deadliest migratory route in the world. That's four times more than this time last year.

Instead of investing in policies and assets to save lives, European authorities consistently refuse to respond to distress calls in the Mediterranean and they also coordinate with the Libyan authorities to return people to detention centres in which killings, torture and sexual abuses are routinely recorded. As long as Europe decides to let people drown or return them to violence and abuse, we will continue to work at sea to alleviate loss of life and denounce human rights violations.
