Hello GlobalGiving partners and donors!

Last week (Oct 17, 2014), two senior GlobalGiving senior officers visited Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc. (CJFI) assisted projects and communities in Tacloban City and Leyte Province.  If you could remember, CJFI’s relief assistance to Haiyan victims has attracted you and thousands of donors through GlobalGiving that made the relief activities possible, successful, and still on going, this time for long term recovery measures.

CJFI senior staff welcome the visitors and briefed them about CJFI immediate and long term recovery program for Haiyan victims in Tacloban City and Leyte Province through a video that highlighted CJFI’s relief undertakings.  The briefing was held at CJFI Action Center in Tacloban City. After the briefing, the group proceeded to Barangay Bislig, a coastal community of Tanauan town which was badly hit by typhoon Haiyan where powerful storm surge wrecked the fishing boats; strong winds wiped out houses, and chopped down trees. CJFI’s relief assistance in this area were food packs distributed a week after Haiyan, construction of Day Care Center, and distribution of fishing boats.

The group went to Barangay Sabang Danguitan and met the local officials, day care kids, and fishing boat recipients.  The kids were happy to see the visitors who shared moments talking with the kids, happily mingling with them. The residents in this small fishing community expressed their sincere gratitude to generous people of America through GlobalGiving for helping them.

The group also met the fishing boats recipients and LGU staff of the Agriculture Office of MacArthur town.  The town was named in honor of General Douglas MacArthur whose words of promise “I shall return” became part of historical account of Philippine history.  The battle of Leyte took place in Gulf of Leyte lead by Gen MacArthur on October 23-26, 1944.  It was the largest naval battle in modern history where at least 212 allied battle ships clashed with the remnants of the Japanese Imperial Army of World War II.

After MacArthur town, the group paid a courtesy call to Tolosa Mayor. CJFI had conducted several relief assistance to this town such as relief food pack distribution, donation of generator set, donation of various medicines, stress debriefing for kids, giving of basic household appliance, gift giving and party for kids.  The Municipal Mayor was so happy to meet the group and GlobalGiving personnel.  He asked GlobalGiving to extend more support to his town as they have more things to do to address the needs of his constituents.

The last stop was the location of two day care centers in Tacloban City at Barangay Fatima and Barangay Nulatula.  The two centers are serving around 200 kids.  Last month (Sep 2014), CJFI volunteers made a gift giving party to day care kids in these centers.  Various schools supplies were handed out to the kids by the volunteers.  CJFI also installed the centers two ceiling fans to give comfort to kids.

The visit of GlobalGiving was wrapped up with a dinner joined by local officials, day care workers and Social Welfare Office personnel of LGUs. CJFI gave GlobalGiving a plaque of appreciation recognizing the support to CJFI that made possible the relief assistance to Haiyan victims in Tacloban City and Leyte.
