Answering the local community need during the emergency starting from the schools in Arquata del Tronto, Norcia and Cascia
After the initial shock in August, which resulted in hundreds of victims and destroyed homes, churches and the peaceful life of villages and towns in the Apennines, we started working on the most urgent needs of reconstruction with the Civil Protection (with whom we had already worked in the 2010 Haiti earthquake) and the Ministry of Education.
We have identified in school projects the greatest needs for children and their families, to return a core element in the everyday life of each community, the school, to take away the children from the tents and other temporary situations as soon as possible.
The first project we completed was the school of Arquata del Tronto: a prefabricated building for 100 children, the elementary School (5 classes for 43 children aged 6 to 10 years), the middle School of First Instance (3 classes for 34 pupils aged 11 to 14 years) and 1 canteen. Then we worked in Norcia and in Cascia.
The Francesca Rava Foundation donated the school to these municipalities, with which a convention has been signed. The supplier was selected based on costs, reliability and experience already gained in emergencies and shared with the Civil Protection and the Ministry of Education.
New projects in the earthquake areas
After completing the construction of six emergency and semi-final school, the Civil Protection and the Extraordinary Commissariat for the Reconstruction for the Earthquake called us to further intervention for the reconstruction of other schools in the Umbria and Marche Regions.
In this case, the Francesca Rava Foundation will also co-ordinate, will implement new projects, in collaboration with local and national institutions, and will donate them to the municipalities
The Civil Protection and the Emergency Rebuilding Office asked the Foundation help for re building new schools:
-1 kindergarten in EGGI (Perugia) Umbria Region;
-1 kindergarten in Pieve Torina (Macerata) Marche Region.
The Fondazione Francesca Rava has established a partnership with the Architecture Univerity of Camerino for the design and study of an innovative project for the final school of Pieve Torina.
To give the territory a beautiful, safe, low environmental impact and, above all, to involve local professionals and to relaunch the activities of the territory.
In particular: Eggi (PG) - Umbria
Eggi is a fraction of the municipality of Spoleto, it is located on the top of a small hill (325 m above sea level) in front of the mountains separating Valnerina from the Umbrian Valley, about 5 km north of Spoleto.
It is inhabited by 481 residents (Istat data, 2001).
The Civil Protection and the Mayor asked us for help for the construction of a new kindergarten.
The aim is to build a semi final nursery for 24 children who currently make commuting in a neighboring municipality.
