Your gift to help victims of the tragic Nepal earthquake is already reaching families in need, helping them survive in the aftermath of this horrendous disaster. You helped make it possible for emergency supplies and compassionate help to arrive within days of the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck on April 25. Thank you!
Because of you, families in the village of Bhotechaur received tarps, jerrycans (water jugs), water purification tablets, cups, soap, and solar lanterns. Your support is also reaching desperate families in a remote village called Khalte in Dhading district, where no other aid had arrived yet. The area is about 3,500 feet up in the Himalayan foothills. More than 1,400 families received tarps and blankets, as well as food – rice, lentils, oil, and salt.
I want you to know that none of this would be possible without your immediate, generous response. You heard the call for help and you gave, and the families who received the first help since the disaster were so grateful. I want to pass along their heartfelt “thank you” to you.
In the village of Khalte, 95% of the homes were either totally destroyed or damaged by the earthquake. One of those who lost everything is Lok, a wife and mother of five children. When the earthquake happened, Lok was outside feeding her animals when she felt the earth move and saw her home start swaying and shaking violently.
She ran screaming and crying because her daughter, Gita, was upstairs in the house at the time. As the roof and the second story wall fell, Gita survived by standing in a door frame, which stood firm and protected Gita from the crumbling wall and held up the roof section near her that could have killed her.
Since the earthquake, Lok and her family have been living under a tarp in temporary shelter. They were so grateful for the food and emergency supplies to help them survive. Lok and her husband are now focused on finding a way to rebuild their home as the monsoon season arrives soon and when it ends in October, winter will not be far away.
Your gift helped bring much-needed emergency supplies and food to families like Lok’s. You also gave them hope to survive and rebuild their lives.
