Dear friends,
Thank you for standing with the women and children of Kenya. We owe you an honest update, and it is a hard one: Scotty’s Rescue Centre has no women in residence right now. Without enough funds for food, medicine and security, we cannot responsibly open our doors, and the beds that should hold sleeping children are empty.
But the need has not gone quiet. In recent weeks, mothers have reached out to us. One wrote just a few words, asking if there was space for her and her 2-year-old baby girl. Another wrote that she was a mother with a young son, looking for “a safe place where we can both be hosted” while she rebuilds her life. She asked whether we could take them in, whether food would be provided, and how to reach us. She is far from Kenya, and still she found us. (We have withheld their names to protect their privacy.)
Behind every message is a mother holding a small child and hoping someone will say yes. Having to tell her that we can’t, not yet, is the hardest part of our work. These women are not asking for much: a bed, a warm meal, medicine when their children are sick, and a few months of safety to get back on their feet. A 2-year-old should be falling asleep to a lullaby in a safe room, not waiting on a stranger’s reply.
Because of you, we are not starting from zero. Your generosity has brought this project to $2,206 of our $5,000 goal, and every gift is bringing those doors closer to opening. We are working to reopen Scotty’s to mothers and their children as soon as we can, and you will be the first to hear when the first family walks in and finally exhales. Thank you for believing that no child should be separated from their mother simply because of poverty, and for being part of the safe place these families are hoping to find.
With deep gratitude,
Deanne Berarducci
