Life After Ebola

By Helen Gianakopoulos | Project Intern

Dear MTM Family,

Liberia has been declared free of Ebola transmission, school is finally back open, and the girls are excited to be back in school. This horrifying Ebola epidemic not only damaged the country, but it also caused students to fall severely behind due to school closings. What happened during Ebola was unacceptable, and we are dedicated to educating these students and rebuilding Liberia’s education system to ensure that something like this never happens again. We have expanded our MTM family to include 35 new students, including Ebola orphans, and we plan to keep growing.

Because many of these students were identified during the time of Ebola, some are from West Point, but others come from surrounding communities. Just like our other students, these girls are given an entrance exam to determine their grade level and a survey to determine that their need matches that of our current students. Our social work team works with both Ebola orphans and regular students to provide much needed support during this time of transition. Our new students are doing very well so far, and we are so excited to welcome them into the MTM family.

Thank you for all you do for us - we are in this together.

For a brighter future,

Helen, Project Intern, and the More Than Me Team

P.S. Donations up to $1000 are still matched 100% for this project only! If you'd like to help ensure that more Ebola orphans receive an education at the MTM Academy, consider giving now!
