Our Work Against Gender Violence Continues!

Members of the MAITRI Network work together

The Maitri Networks’s work is more important than ever- women and girls are at increased risk of violence during lockdown. Those in the Network are collaborating to ensure that support is not only maintained, but strengthened during the pandemic. Amoghamati, our Programmes Manager for Maitri, shares the following update:

The topic of the meeting across organisation last week was about the setting up of the One-Stop-Centres which are also called Sakhi Centres – sakhi meaning female friend. Maitri advocates for these centres being set up and made operational in all of the 32 districts where the new Maitri project is going to work. These centres have been promised by the government but so far implemented in only a few places. One expected result of the project is that in all target districts, the centres are operational at the end of the project period. This needs a lot of advocacy and following up with the local district authorities. The Maitri fellows will also work with the One-Stop-Centres to provide counselling.

The training has been conducted by Smriti, the overall project coordinator and Omkar, the coordinator for Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Thirty-three network members all over India participated in the training.

Thank you for your continued support of this project.

Warm wishes,

Erika Narkiewicz
