Recently, Urja Trust Mumbai, a Maitri Network member who has been working with homeless and run away girls, organized a one day sensitization workshop with railway officials, including railway police, ticket collectors, porters and women railway police constables. The aim was to sensitize these stakeholders to the needs of vulnerable women and what steps they need to take to direct them to the support services and NGOs that can help them.
These frontline officers are the first point of contact for the thousands of girls who reach Dadar station from different parts of India, escaping physical and mental violence and in search of a better future. Unless these frontline railway staff spot them and direct them to the right support services, the girls often fall pray in the hands of people who will exploit them for prostitution or such similar dire outcomes.
Urja organises these sensitisation workshops on a regular basis due to the crucial role played by the railway staff in rescuing these girls and allowing them to get the support they need.
