Increasing Access to Diabetes Education in India

By Sara Leonard | Development Specialist - Grants

Project HOPE is continuing to battle diabetes and cardiovascular disease in India through educating health professionals and the community on the management and treatment of diabetes.  In addition to developing a curriculum that will train health educators to spread awareness on diabetes throughout Sonipat and Visakhapatnam, Project HOPE is also expanding diabetes education in India through a new online platform.

Project HOPE launched the India Diabetes Education E-Learning program (IDEEL) in late 2013.  The course is a self-paced, online learning program which is enhanced by a minimum 15-day clinical internship under the guidance of an endocrinologist and a diabetes educator.  The program is recognized by the International Diabetes Federation and participants become certified diabetes educators upon graduating the program.  To-date more than 450 students have enrolled in the course, including both medical doctors and Allied Health Professionals.

Garima, a nutritionist of 7 years and a recent graduate of IDEEL, describes why this course was valuable to her:  “Diabetes is a lifestyle disorder that can affect the health and family life of people with diabetes.  So, spreading the awareness about diabetes, self-management education, lifestyles modification, role of medication, types of diabetes complications and treatment is very important – and IDEEL has it all.  Now as a Diabetes Educator, I counsel people with diabetes and their family members in a better way.”

Thanks to your support, dedicated and passionate health professionals will be able to continue providing quality care and education to diabetes patients and their families.  For more information on HOPE’s diabetes education work in India, visit Project HOPE's website and IDEEL's facebook page for program updates.
