HELP STOP BLINDNESS IN ITS TRACKS FOR 700 CHILDREN

A child’s vision is their fundamental connection to learning, play, and personal development. At the Boys Mentoring Advocacy Network (BMAN), we believe that protecting a boy's eyesight is an essential part of cultivating him into a healthy, thriving member of society.

This past quarter presented severe financial challenges for our Help Stop Blindness in Its Tracks for 700 Children initiative. Because of critical funding constraints, we were unable to directly finance medical treatments and specialized eye care for needy boys who came to us for help.

While reporting an operational deficit is difficult, transparency remains the foundation of our partnership with you. This report outlines our recent hurdles, the proactive steps we are taking to connect our boys with alternative care networks, and our urgent appeal to fund the 8 children currently waiting for sight-saving support.

The Quarter in Review: Navigating Funding Shortfalls

During this reporting period, our project faced an acute funding bottleneck, rendering us unable to directly purchase eye medications, fund clinical consultations, or sponsor corrective procedures for the young boys on our register.

Proactive Mitigation & External Referrals:

Refusing to leave these boys stranded, our project leadership immediately pivoted to an active referral strategy:

• Inter-Agency Outreach: We systematically mapped local healthcare initiatives, eye foundations, and sister non-governmental organizations operating in Lagos and surrounding areas.

• Direct Patient Referrals: We submitted case files and referred our vulnerable boys to these external organizations to help them access subsidized or free ophthalmic medications and treatments.

• The Current Reality: Unfortunately, we have yet to receive positive feedback or assistance from these local partner organizations. Many of these entities are experiencing similar resource constraints, leaving our boys without the critical interventions they desperately need.

The Urgent Waiting List: 8 Children in Darkness

Because external referral pipelines have not yielded immediate help, the burden falls back on our collective efforts.

We currently have 8 boys on our active waiting list who are suffering from progressive eye conditions, severe infections, and visual impairments:

• The Health Risk: Every week a child goes without specialized eye drops, prescription lenses, or clinical intervention, the risk of permanent, irreversible visual impairment increases.

• The Educational Barrier: These boys are struggling to read classroom whiteboards, complete homework, or participate safely in sports and community activities.

• The Financial Gap: The rising cost of imported ophthalmic medications and specialized eye exams has made it impossible for their low-income families to afford treatment independently.

The Strategy Forward: Clearing the Backlog

We cannot allow these 8 boys to lose their vision to preventable causes. Our leadership team is executing a focused recovery strategy for the coming quarter:

1. Direct Medical Sponsorships: We are seeking individual or corporate sponsors to adopt specific children from our waiting list of 8, covering their exact diagnostic and medication costs.

2. Clinic Partnership Negotiations: We are re-engaging private optometry clinics to secure subsidized block rates for consultations and basic medications.

3. Emergency Micro-Appeals: We are launching an urgent fundraising drive aimed specifically at raising the capital required to clear the current backlog of 8 cases before the end of the year.
