Sumatra Rainforest Institute has recently been working hard with local communities and our local contracted veterenarian to not only educate the public about domestic animal health but have also actively been out and treated these animals.
On Thursday 16th August SRI launched their ''Domestic animal health programe''. Equipped with medicine, information and good spirit the Wildlife Rescue Unit set off to Ulu Pungkut, a community about two hours from the head office. SRI have previous relations in this community as the farmers are also involved in our coffee agroforestry programe.
The team traveled to three seperate locations throughout the day and saw a total of 25 dogs. The animals were generally in good health with common issues such as fleas and skin infections. All animals received
Rabies vaccinations, vitimin injections, de worming and de fleaing medicine. The most unique issue the team saw was a dog who had a large wound due to a macaque monkey! He was treated with antibiotics and antiseptic and recommended to seek further assistance.
This community of farmers relies heavily on their dogs for the protection of their agricultural land and their personal safety. They
work alongside these animals everyday and understand the importance of their maintained health.
We were thrilled with the positive and welcoming responce from our
first community visit.
The team on the ground here would like to thank those of you reading
this and supporting this organisation.
Without you the medicine, vaccinations and travel to these places would not have been possible.
Please consider a small donation so we can continue this work that has a tangible positive effect on these rural locations and people.
