A Lot of Progress

By Dr. Jennifer Showers | SRI Veterinarian

What am I? How big am I? 600gm Pangolin
What am I? How big am I? 600gm Pangolin

Because of the fantastic donations  made through Global Giving we have been able to purchase the medicines, veterinary equipment , and smaller transport cages needed to provide basic veterinary treatment and surgery for confiscated and injured or orphaned Sumatran Wildlife from the Southern part of North Sumatra.

The challange will be providing care for the increasing number of cases and trying to address the mutlitude of interacting factors that contributr to loss of habitat,  increasing cases of wildlife/ human conflict,  and increasing access of hunters to rainforest areas.

At the moment we have a juvenile or baby Pangolin whose mother was killed by hunters. Although a little lacking in personality he is a very determined little fellow and uses his long claws to try to find some milk- unfortunately for us his foster mother's skin is not so scaly and not adapting well to the affection of his long claws.

He looks like a reptile but is actually a mammal and has had to make do with a modified syringe/bottle. We will have to try to model an imitation scaly mother and start night hunting for anthills so his rehabilitation will take a long time and a lot of effort! Pangolins  are critically endangered as they are  one of the most trafficked species of wildlife.

Our latest addition is an agile black handed gibbon. Again his mother was killed when he was quite young and his teeth have been clipped. His rehabilitation will be a long slow process but he is a very fit and healthy young lad  in need of gibbon company. Unfortunately It will not be long before he has company as there are many reported cases which will be verified before confiscation by the wildlife police.
