Here at Sumatra Rainforest Institute we are very happy to report that Kuat is continueing to thrive at our transit centre.
To take you into a day in the life of a young Gibbin here it begins at 8am when he wakes up from a deep sleep with his favourite blanket. Kuat is fed at 9am with a variety a leafy greens, vegetables and fruit- his first choice is always a lychee!
After breakfast either our local keeper Ibu Maryam or our volunteer vet nurse Kate will enter the enclosure equipped with freshly chopped banana leaves, papaya leaves and mango leaves, these ae placed on ledges for enrichment purposes- generally Kuat tares them down, rips them up and tumbles around with them.
This is also when he is groomed- as he was taken from his Mother at 2 months old he has never been groomed or had to groom so his fur tends to matt, this is also a nice time for him to receive gentle affaction and love like he should of had if he was still with his family in the forest.
As a snack before lunch he get a hard boiled egg for extra protein! He loves the almost just as much as lychees!
After this is lunch and after lunch he swings, plays, hides under his blanket, looks at himself in the mirror and watches birds fly above. His last meal is at 3pm before he should put himself to bed at 4pm.
We expect to invest in some more enrichment in this next month as he is growing and getting more curious.
We also expect to receive another Juevenile Gibbon to be surrendered, a yellow Lar Gibbon and we are now in the process of enhancing an enclosure for this animal. The hope is that over time this potentially new gibbon and Kuat will get along and be placed in the same enclosure to have companionship and very importantly be able to learn off eachother natural behaviours.
From all of us here on the ground, a very big thankyou for your kind donations so we can continue to give Maryam a source of income in a job she very much enjoys and Kuat a happier start to his young life, A little goes a long way!
