Healthcare in Rural Haiti in the Time of Covid19

Community Health Workers Serving their Neighbors
Community Health Workers Serving their Neighbors

The CHP has worked in rural Haiti for over 30 years.  Through the long-term relationships developed over the years and deep commitment to our Haitian partners, we have supported locally-led initiatives to meet the community’s acute needs and visions for growth and prosperity.  Our partnership addresses all aspects of the community including education, health and wellness, jobs and economic opportunity.

Today in the face of a crisis like Covid19, support for health and wellness is critical in Haiti and specifically rural areas where medical facilities are woefully inadequate.

To explain why the Colorado Haiti Project is well positioned to provide the support needed, it is important to understand the history and structure of this partnership.  CHP has worked in a focused area of the Nippes region for over 30 years, building trust and long-term friendships.  This has allowed the community to honestly share their concerns and health issues.  Fifteen years ago, we helped form a network of community health workers (CHWs) who lived in the most remote villages.  These stalwart women know their communities intimately and are able to help educate and assist to strengthen the health system. They play a vital role addressing challenges associated with the lack of medical practitioners per population, resource constraints, poor infrastructure and difficult terrain. CHWs ensure that children receive vaccinations, that malnutrition is identified and addressed, that a skilled attendant is present at births, and that patients with TB, HIV, and cholera receive appropriate and quality care.

Today as Haiti faces the unprecedented challenge of Corona, please support these women and clinic staff as they alert, protect and care for their community. They will be the front line on preventing widespread COVID-19 infection through community education and infection prevention. CHP will work with local health leaders, the Ministry of Public Health (MSPP) Clinic, and CHWs to improve the provision of skilled maternal and child health (MCH) support, strengthen data collection, and improve the integration of care between the clinic and CHWs in Petit Trou.

Each donation made through May, 2020 will help provide protective equipment for the clinic and educational materials and support for the community health aides. In Haiti, with lack of medical providers and infrastructure, there will be an even stronger need to keep families safe.  And these community health aides will be on the front lines.

Please donate NOW as you can, remember even in our times of trial, the families in remote Haiti still need your support.
