The JFC project is moving forward nicely. The major part of the planning phase has been completed and the teams are moving forward on implementation. The project has been paying community members to plant several thousand culturally important trees in select areas. This provides some immediate income for workers and shows visible project progress. This summer we had numerous community meetings and met with many representatives from different organizations and governments. One of our goals is to build broad support for the project, intellectually, financially, and through partnerships on activities. One important direction that has emerged is the decision to incorporate sustainable coffee production into the restoration planning. The community currently grows robusta and arabica coffee on a very small scale but is well suited for larger production of arabica. In only a few short years the community will have an additional, stable income while simultaneously working toward longer restoration goals like greater biological diversity and erosion prevention.
