The world watched as Liberian kids as young as 10 years old were exploited as armed combatants. Under threat of death, they committed terrible acts of violence against the Liberian society. Many turned to substance abuse to cope with their experiences. In partnership with IDEFOC, we aim to provide groups of former child soldiers a program to help them recover from their trauma and obtain the skills necessary for social reintegration.
During the two Liberian Civil Wars, children were recruited as soldiers and forced to fight rather than obtain an education. They were left with deep psychological wounds and drastically limited opportunities, which they treat with narcotics and alcohol.
IDEFOCS programs, including initiatives at the Rilo Foundation Educational School System and Safe Zone Laundry, are empowering youth and former child soldiers with sustainable business opportunities. Access to business loans is helping to: 1) Increase resources to drive higher output at laundry services in Buchanan City (Liberia); 2) Expand Training by equipping more individuals with life-changing business and technical skills; 3) Enhance financial stability to support long-term reintegration.
Our effort is set to build brighter futures by equipping ventures with the skills, support, and capital they need to thrive in supporting reintegration of former child soldiers. Successfully reintegrated child soldiers contribute in creating resilient communities and inspiring stories of personal triumph.
