Thank you for helping farming families in Ethiopia protect the chickens they rely on for food and income.
Newcastle disease is one of the biggest threats to village chickens in Ethiopia, capable of wiping out an entire flock almost overnight. To help prevent this, we train local community vaccinators who bring affordable vaccination services directly to farmers.
This year, we trained new vaccinators in Sidama and provided refresher training to more than 100 others. Across three vaccination campaigns, they protected 221,300 chickens belonging to 30,533 households. In Aleta Wondo, more than 80,000 vaccine doses were distributed through a single local veterinary store. The store owner provides vaccines to community vaccinators on credit, allowing them to reach farmers before receiving payment for their work.
For families, reliable access to vaccination means greater confidence to raise more chickens, sell eggs and invest in their futures. Almaz is one of these farmers.
A mother of four from Dobe Kebele, Almaz has raised village chickens for more than eight years, earning an income from selling eggs and live birds. In the past, keeping a larger flock was risky. Disease could wipe out her chickens overnight, while accessing vaccines often meant long journeys and uncertain availability. Now, community vaccinators bring vaccination services directly to her.
“In the past, I did not have the confidence to keep many chickens because Newcastle disease could wipe out my flock at any time. Since the vaccination program started, I have much greater confidence to raise more chickens at home.”
Today, Almaz is growing her poultry business. She recently sold 18 birds from her flock of more than 30, reinvesting the money in young hens and feed. Her poultry income also helps pay for her children’s schooling, food and other household essentials.
Thank you for helping farmers like Almaz protect their flocks, strengthen their livelihoods and provide for their families with greater confidence.
