CLC Program Closes for Now

By Katie Ann Crosman | International Volunteer/DEPDC-GMS

DEDPDC’s Community Learning Centre (CLC) classes are an important extension of the work we do here at DEPDC/GMS. These classes allow us to target a larger population of community members who are in need and want of education and awareness. CLC was created in 2005 as a way to provide human rights education, computer, literacy, and life skills training in both Thai and English. These classes are open to everyone and serve those who are at-risk of being trafficked; undocumented migrants, refugees, ethnic minorities, and other community members living in the Mae Sai area.

Last semester we reported that our CLC teacher had an unfortunate family accident and was not able to continue teaching CLC classes. Sadly, she has had to take a permanent leave of absence. For a short period of time we had volunteers with us from China who were able to step in and hold classes for students. They were with us for the Chinese New Year and taught the students the Chinese alphabet and Chinese dance for 2 weeks. Since their departure, though, we have not been able to find a full time teacher and are heartbroken to report that we will have to close the CLC program.

We will continue to do everything we can to reopen this program. In the meantime we ask that you help spread the word by sharing this update to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. We are looking for volunteers to help teach English speaking and literacy skills.  If you or someone you know are interested, you can find the application on our webpage under “Opportunities in Mae Sai.” It’s with the strong support of our community that we have faith CLC will once again be a thriving program.

To all past and present donors, thank you from everyone here at DEPDC/GMS. You continue to keep our mission and our hope alive that through education and awareness we can prevent human trafficking and create a better world for everyone!
